Adult Fundamentals At Tampa Jiu Jitsu Academy
Adult Fundamentals is where the overwhelming majority of our students begin. It's built for one specific person: an adult who has never grappled a single time and wants to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu correctly from the very first class. If that's you, you've found the right room — and you'll have plenty of company, since almost everyone here started in this exact class.
Jiu Jitsu can look genuinely confusing from outside the ropes. From the inside, it's a skill you stack one layer at a time. Our fundamentals curriculum takes the art apart into manageable pieces — escapes, control positions, finishes, and the concepts tying them together — so you always know what you're working on and why.
Who This Class Is For
- Complete beginners who want a structured start, not a trial by fire on day one
- Adults looking for a smarter workout that doubles as a real self-defense skill
- Busy professionals who need an outlet that clears the head and rebuilds discipline
- Anyone returning to the mats after time away who wants to rebuild a clean base
What You'll Learn
- Core positions — guard, mount, side control, and back control — and how to move between them
- Staying safe first: framing, escapes, and getting out of trouble without panicking
- A foundation of submissions and the setups that actually make them land
- Using leverage and timing to handle partners who are bigger or stronger
- Mat etiquette, safe habits, and how to be the kind of partner people want to train with
How A Fundamentals Class Runs
Every class follows the same shape: a joint-friendly warm-up, one focused technique broken down in detail, guided drilling with a partner, and — only once you're ready — light, controlled positional rounds. Coaches stay on the mat the entire time, correcting small details and answering questions before confusion has a chance to set in.
There's no ego in this room. Nobody is trying to smash the new person. Higher belts who train alongside beginners are there to help you flow and build confidence at your own pace. You set your own intensity, you tap early while you're learning, and you leave every class sharper than you walked in.
Consistency does the heavy lifting. Two to three classes a week is plenty to see real change in your first couple of months — calmer under pressure, better instincts, and that first moment a technique actually clicks against a resisting partner.
Why Train Fundamentals Here
We treat the beginner experience as the most important thing we teach. A strong first ninety days is what turns a curious visitor into a lifelong grappler, so we invest in it heavily — clear teaching, patient coaching, and a room that wants you to stay.
You're never just a face in the crowd. Coaches learn your name, your goals, and where you're stuck, then help you get unstuck. That attention is the difference this academy is built around.
Class Times
Adult Fundamentals runs weekly in the evening (see the schedule for exact times), with additional Adults Gi classes you can add in as you progress.

Adult Fundamentals is for ages 15 and up. Younger students train in our separate, age-split Kids Jiu Jitsu program.
Most students earn their first stripe within a few months of consistent training, usually two to three classes a week. Progress is based on attendance and skill, not the calendar.
Absolutely. The pace is beginner-friendly and coaches scale every drill to your fitness level. Plenty of our Fundamentals students start in their 30s, 40s, and beyond.
