No-Gi & Wrestling At Tampa Jiu Jitsu Academy
No-Gi & Wrestling strips the jacket away and changes the entire equation. Without collars and sleeves to grip, everything speeds up — scrambles get chaotic, control comes from body position and hooks instead of cloth, and the pace rewards conditioning and timing. It's the style behind MMA and modern submission-grappling events, and it's genuinely fun to train.
This class blends no-gi Jiu Jitsu with real wrestling. That means we don't just cover what to do once you're on the ground — we teach you how to get there on your own terms and how to stay in control once you do.
Who This Class Is For
- Grapplers who want a faster, more athletic pace
- MMA-focused athletes who need takedowns and scramble skills
- Gi students looking to round out their game without the jacket
- Anyone who wants serious conditioning disguised as fun
What You'll Learn
- Takedowns — singles, doubles, snap-downs, and how to chain them safely
- No-gi control: seatbelt, body locks, hooks, and underhooks
- Leg-lock entries and defense inside a safe, level-appropriate system
- Guard passing and retention without grips slowing everything down
- Scramble literacy — winning the chaotic moments that decide most no-gi matches
How The Program Works
Classes cover both standing and ground work. We warm the body up properly for wrestling movement, drill takedowns under control so nobody gets hurt, then flow into the ground game where the submission grappling lives. You'll finish with live rounds that tie the standup and the ground together.
Beginners are genuinely welcome — you'll get scaled, safe versions of everything and be paired with partners at your level. Experienced grapplers get the pace and technical depth to seriously sharpen their no-gi game, with leg locks and other advanced positions introduced responsibly and an emphasis on tapping early while learning.
A lot of members fall in love with the athletic side of the sport right here. It builds cardio, explosiveness, and the kind of composure that only comes from surviving a hundred scrambles.
Why Train No-Gi & Wrestling Here
We coach wrestling as a real skill, not an afterthought. Getting the takedown and staying on top decides matches and fights, so it gets real attention.
The program pairs naturally with our gi classes. Train both and you become a complete, adaptable grappler dangerous in any ruleset.
Class Times
No-Gi & Wrestling runs midday and evening on select days — check the schedule and stack it with Open Mat for extra live rounds.

No-Gi & Wrestling FAQ
No. We teach takedowns from scratch with control and safety in mind. Beginners and gi-only students are equally welcome.
Yes, when it's coached properly, which is our priority. You'll drill at a controlled pace and only spar at a level appropriate for you.
We do, responsibly. Leg entanglements are part of modern no-gi, so we introduce them with a clear focus on control, defense, and tapping early while learning.
A rash guard with shorts or spats — no zippers, buttons, or pockets. A snug athletic shirt works fine to start.
